Gerald Putt is a wildlife and nature artist who grew up in a small, quiet,
rural, central Pennsylvania town of Boiling Springs. The ducks on the lake
in his home town inspired him at a young age and later became one of his
first subjects. Today ducks, elk, turkey and deer are some of the subjects
that have harvested the most praise for Putt. Gerry will soon be building
a new home where he will have his new art studio and where he will have
his art displayed for viewing as well as for sale.
Gerry’s painting “Greenwing Trio” (green-winged teal) won the 2015 Pennsylvania Duck Stamp Contest ~ making
him the first and only person to win this contest eleven-times ( 2015, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2002, 2000, 1998,
1996 & 1991 ). This is almost four-times that of any other artist. Putt has been in the “Top Twenty” of the prestigious
Federal Duck Stamp Contest many times but in the 2014 competition, he broke into the “Top-5”. Gerry was very
happy to do this and now he will try even harder to win. His other Top-10 “Federal” finishes were in 2003 finishing
in 6th-place and in 2005 finishing in 7th place. Putt won the 2012 Nevada State Duck Stamp and the PA Game
Commission’s 2012 “Working Together for Wildlife” Art Competition. His winning painting “Winterberry Bandits”
also made Gerry a three-time winner of this competition. Putt was honored (for the second time ) by the Ruffed Grouse Society to create the “2011 - 2012 National - Artist of the Year” print. His painting “Fan Dancer”- Ruffed Grouse was a very popular print amongst the Sponsors of RGS. Gerry won the 2009 North Carolina State Duck Stamp ( 2009, 2007,
2006, 2005 & 2004 ) and the 2006 Illinois Duck Stamp ( 2006, 2005 & 2004 ). Putt’s painting “Return of the Monarch”
won the 2001 Pennsylvania Elk - Fine Art Print Contest and his wigeon painting won the 1997 Colorado Duck Stamp
Contest. Gerry has been in the Ducks Unlimited National Art Package twice and was chosen as “runner-up” for Ducks Unlimited “International Artist of the Year”. Putt has won “Best of Show” & “Peoples Choice” honors at many wildlife
Art show plus other state and national competitions. He was named Ducks Unlimited “Artist of the Year” for the states of Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Colorado and many times for his home state of Pennsylvania.
Gerry is very proud to have just completed his 40th cover painting or the PENNSYLVANIA GAME NEWS magazine plus over the years he has done many hundreds of illustrations for inside this magazine as well.
Putt is a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and a Life Member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He is in his
“fifth-decade” of supporting conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation,
Ruffed Grouse Society, Trout Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, Keystone Elk Country Alliance and the National
Wild Turkey Federation just to name a few. The sale of Gerry’s donated art has raised many thousands of dollars for the improvement and preservation of wildlife habitat.
Putt’s original paintings, limited-edition prints and giclees are in art collections world-wide including the art collections
of former U.S. President George W. Bush and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge. Putt has been working as a full-time wildlife artist since 1979. Gerry believes, “An artist can not rest on one’s laurels but must strive to improve with each and every painting.”.
He was a Charter-Member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association. Putt is also an active-member of the PA Outdoor Writers Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of American plus many wildlife conservation organizations.
